A root canal (endodontic therapy) is a dental procedure wherein the pulp of the tooth is removed. The pulp is the soft tissue inside the hollow of the tooth where blood vessels, nerve, tissues, and other cellular entities reside.
Root canals are typically necessary due to infection or when the structural integrity of the tooth is compromised due to decay or breakage. Root canals are among the most feared dental procedures; however when combined with the proper applications of a local anesthetic, a root canal is painless.
